adObo Origin Story:

Beginning in the 1990’s, artist Romulus ‘Sonny’ Andalis, embarked on his journey to understand his heritage. He began researching Filipino history extensively and was naturally drawn to pre-colonial writing and native Filipino alphabets. While connecting with the Alibata and Baybayin script, Sonny began incorporating this knowledge into his art. Grounded also in the early hip-hop movement, Sonny went from tagging on public walls to elevating his writing of ancient scripts on different mediums. adObo in English, now became adObo in Baybayin and can be presently seen within the round OG logo. Through understanding his roots and finding a form of self expression, his passion for script art gave birth to a clearer cultural identity. madebyadObo is more about an artist organically creating a brand inspired by cultural exploration and discovery, rather than a brand he set out to create intentionally. Through adObo, Sonny hopes his audience will feel inspired to explore their roots as well, and connect with that important part of one's self. Sonny takes great inspiration from his late brother who was deeply aware of the history of their Filipino culture.
